I AM LIAM TWOMEY

Elite Triathlete and Aspiring Tokyo Paralympian

I was born in 1994 and at age 7 I was diagnosed with a Ewing Sarcoma and had my lower right leg amputated.

I struggled throughout school feeling different and less than everyone else. My teenage years were filled with self destructive behavior, trouble and grief.

At 21 the light bulb went on that I was going nowhere quickly, so I moved to Sydney to start afresh.

In 2016 I learnt to swim which eventually led to trying a para-triathlon in 2018. I entered my first race and was hooked within 30 seconds.

My goal is to represent Australia at the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics and beyond!

START FOUNDATION -EMPOWERING AMPUTEES THROUGH SPORT

START Foundation was established in 2013 through the inspirational story of Kerryn Harvey, who contracted a life threatening flesh eating bacteria as a result of a seemingly minor cycling accident. Radical surgery was required and a right forequarter amputation (arm and shoulder) was performed.

Through the generous support of our sponsors, donors and volunteers, we are able to provide grants for a new limb, limb modification or equipment modification, to enable Amputees to participate in sport.

START Foundation has been created to "empower amputees through sport" as they have done for me and many others.

I commenced a Twomey to Tokyo fundraiser with no real expectation and a touch of trepidation of how it would go however the support has been brilliant and we raised just on $12,000!

To all the people who contributed I am extremely grateful and humbled by the support. Your generosity has been immense. All funds will be used wisely and are allocated to specific needs.

Massive thanks to my supporters at the Tattersalls Club in Sydney, a special mention for Phil Reichelt of the Tenant Leasing Group for his sponsorship and of course over 50 other friends, family, acquaintances . They are all now members of Team Twomey.
